There are certain trend we've noticed with regard to auto accidents. One of them has to do with gender and accident rates. Let's consider these matters in more detail right now.

Male Drivers More Likely to Be Involved in Auto Accidents

Statistics have shown that men are more likely to be involved in auto accidents than women. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that males accounted for 70 percent of all passenger vehicle driver fatalities in the year 2013. While part of this may be due to more men on the road and more time behind the wheel, the numbers can be quite alarming.

Reckless Behaviors More Likely with Male Motorists

Apart from proportion of drivers and time spent on the road, a major reason why there are more male fatalities and accidents is reckless behaviors on the road. Men are more likely to engage in reckless or unsafe behaviors than women. The research firm Quality Planning found that men are 3.4 times more likely to receive tickets for reckless driving than women, and 3.1 times more likely to be pulled over for drunk driving.

Speeding, for instance, was a major contributing factor for male auto accident fatalities. According to 2013 numbers from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 31 percent of male auto accident fatalities were related to speeding, while just 22 percent of female driver fatalities were related to speeding.

Women Tend to Pay Lower Auto Insurance Rates

Because men are more prone toward accidents, women tend to pay lower auto insurance rates. This is simply based on numbers and risk that are considered by insurance companies. Keep in mind the rates may vary based on the type of car that is being insured, driving record, and other factors. On the whole, however, auto insurance companies are attuned to these gender trends in auto accidents.

Recklessness Tends to Diminish with Age for Both Genders

While men are more likely to be involved in auto accidents than women, there is a trend fewer auto accidents occurring as drivers get older. Numbers show that one the whole, elderly motorists are safer than others on the road, particularly motorists aged 15-19 and 20-25. Much of this has to do with road experience and fewer reckless behaviors with advanced age.
