Florida Today-April 26, 2013-According to the article a Melbourne police officer remains on administrative leave as Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the details of a deadly collision that occurred Wednesday night between the officers patrol car and a bicyclist. The 53-year-old Indian Harbour Beach, resident died after being taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida. The 33-year-old officer was responding to a call fro service late Wednesday when his vehicle collided with the bicyclist. The accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Bluebird Boulevard and the 500 block of Eau Gallie Boulevard.
The article goes onto say that the officer was driving his 2007 Chevy Impala eastbound on Eau Gallie in the right lane. The bicyclist was crossing the road in a southwesterly direction. The police officers patrol car struck the bicyclist and threw him to the ground. A check of the officers vehicle internal system showed that the officer did not have on his blue lights or sire as he drove to the scene. Investigators are working on finding out how fast he was traveling and the position of the bicyclist.
