Florida Today-November 11, 2011-Andrew Knapp-According to the article a 23-year-old woman was critically injured early Thursday morning in Palm Bay, Brevard County, Florida when a driver apparently dozed off at the wheel and rammed a police cruiser and then struck her. A spokeswoman for the Palm Bay Police Department say an officer spotted the woman walking along the roadway. Her car had broken down near the intersection of Emerson and Island Drive in Palm Bay, Florida. The officer helped the woman by giving her ride back to her vehicle. The article goes onto say the cruiser had its flasher lights on and was pulled over behind the womans vehicle. As both the officer and the woman got out, a Buick sedan drifted off the two-lane roadway. Investigators believe the driver of the Buick had fallen asleep. According to the article the officer was able to escape the accident and tried to holler to the woman to get out of the way, but the vehicle hit the patrol car and struck her. The woman was flown to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Buick was not hurt in the accident, but does have a lengthy history of traffic violations. According to court records he has multiple misdemeanor convictions and at least one felony conviction for battery on a law enforcement officer or fire fighter.
