USA Today-April 12, 2011-Larry Copeland-According to this article Texas State House, last week, passed a bill allowing a speed limit of 85 mph on some highways. The Texas State senate is considering a similar bill. In Kansas, the legislature raised the limit to 75 mph on more than 1000 miles of roadway. The measure currently awaits the signature of the governor. According to Adrian Lund of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety "we know that if people travel faster, were going to have more deaths on highways." Currently, Texas has more than 500 miles of highway with speed limits of 80 mph. According to Jerry Johns of the Austin based southwestern insurance information service (insurance trade association) "if the speed limit is increased to 85 on certain roads in Texas, we will see a dramatic increase in the number of people that are severely injured or become fatalities."
