United States Military Striving for Motorcycle Rider Safety
Motorcycle.com-Jeff Cobb April 16, 2009-From October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2008 the United States Department of Defense reported 125 motorcycle riders killed. According to this study the U.S. Army lost 51 soldiers, the Navy lost 33 sailors and the Marines lost 25 soldiers. The Air Force, the only branch reporting an improving record, had 15 motorcyclist fatalities (its fewest since 2001). Although the United States Coast Guard was unable to supply hard data it does share motorcycle safety concerns with the four larger military branches. Most of the soldiers killed were riding sport bikes. The military is taking steps to motivate riders toward safer practices to apply principles of "risk management" to motorcyclists training.
