A Fatal Trucking Accident Closes Interstate 95 in Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida

Florida Today-December 14, 2011-According to the article officials have closed down the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near mile marker 189 in Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida. The fatal accident occurred just south of the Wickham Road exit early Wednesday morning around 5:00 a.m. involving tractor trailers. According to Brevard County Fire Rescue a tractor trailer carrying general merchandise and a tractor trailer carrying PVC piping were heavily damaged. Another tractor trailer was carrying 70- gallons of diesel fuel that spilled onto the roadway. While a crew was working to clean the spill, traffic was diverted to Wickham Road and roads were to be closed until 11:00 a.m.

Florida Highway Patrol said the truck driven by a 57-year-old Jacksonville man was not following traffic at a safe distant. The driver rear ended the tractor trailer carrying the PVC piping which was driven through the cab. The driver died in his vehicle. The 48-year-old Georgia driver carrying the piping suffered minor injuries.
