Motorcycle Consumer News-September 2010-According to this article the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a statement announcing the withdrawal of its approval of the important sale of up to 200,000 Chinese-manufactured, gas-powered off-road motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. Apparently the EPA suspects that tailpipe emissions information was either incomplete or falsified with regard to these vehicles. The article points out that this is the first time the EPA has voided certificates of conformity for these types of vehicles and only the second time the agency has done so for any type of vehicle. The EPA is considering an enforcement action under the Clean Air Act, which could lead to significant financial plenties against the businesses that manufactured or imported these types of recreational vehicles.

Max-Trac, DVA Avon Motorcycle Tyres, is recalling certain Avon Cobra AV72 motorcycle tires, size 240/50R16 84B, produced from October 11 through November 7, 2009. These tires failed to comply with Federal Motorcycle Vehicle Safety Standard No. 119. Apparently separation of the breaker/ply can occur, resulting in early tire failure. Should this occur, the tread may separate from the tire casing, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Avon Motorcycle Tyres will notify owners and replace the tires free of charge, including mounting and balancing. The safety recall began on May 17, 2010. Motorcycle Consumer News-August 2010-BRP is recalling certain model year 2010 Spyder RS SE5 2nd series and RT SE5 Roadsters. When bringing a vehicle equipped with the SE5 semi-automatic transmission to a full stop, the clutch may remain engage, stalling the engine. Once the engine has stalled, it could be impossible to restart, and the rear wheel could be blocked. Should this occur the vehicle may not be able to be pushed off the roadway, increasing the risk of a crash. BRP will notify owners and BRP dealers will repair vehicles free of charge. Advanced Carbon Composites is recalling its EXT-004 helmet. They’re recalling all EXT-004 motorcycle helmets, sizes S-M, M-L and L-XL. Apparently these helmets failed to conform to the penetration requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218, “Motorcycle Helmets.”
As a result of this short coming, in the event of a crash, the helmet could be penetrated, possibly causing serious injuries to the wearer of the helmet. Florida Today-March 31, 2010-A Melbourne resident was air lifted to an Orlando hospital after he suffered injuries in a car fire that occurred in Melbourne, Florida. This according to Brevard County Fire-Rescue personnel. Apparently the Brevard County man was working on a car at Grand Prix Motors when he suffered the burn injury according the Brevard County Sheriff’s office.

Motorcycle Consumer News Volume 41, #3, March 2010-Models effected: 2008-2010 F650GS, F800GS. BMW is recalling certain model year 2008-2010 F650G and F800GS motorcycles manufactured between January 2008 and December 2009. During engine operation, a vacuum is created in order to draw fresh air into the canister. The air then mixes with fuel vapors captured by the canister and is subsequently combusted. Due to the routing of the ventilation hose, water near the end of the hose could be drawn into the charcoal canister. As a result, water could flow into the canister, causing the motor to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
BMW dealers will inspect and add additional hose and route it such that the present defect is avoided. This remedy will be preformed by dealers free of charge. Owners may contact BMW at 800-831-1117. NHTSA Campaign ID#: 09V499000

According to a Wall Street Journal article (2-1, Linebaugh) Toyota Motor Corporation is going forward with a publicity campaign to discuss solutions to the manufacturer’s massive recalls. The company is seeking to appease consumer concerns over sudden acceleration in its vehicles. It is hoped by Toyota that this publicity campaign will resolve a crisis that is truly damaged its reputation and left millions of drivers wondering wether their cars are safe.

According to January 21, 2010, press release issued by the US Food and Drug Administration, the Nipro Medical Corporation has voluntarily recalled all of its Gluco Pro Insulin Syringes because of a defect that may cause the needle to detached from the syringe, resulting in it’s being stuck in the insulin vial, pushed back into the syringe, or lodged in the plaintiffs skin.

According to the article a product was one of the largest scale recall (in terms of the number of units recalled) in 2009 was a series of inflatable baby floats manufactured by Aqua-Leisure Industries based in Massachusetts. The CPSC received 31 reports of leg straps on the baby floats that had torn, causing children to fall into the water. While no injuries were reported, the CPSC found the product caused a drowning risk. Aqua-Leisure recalled 4 million of the baby floats and owners were offered a full refund.
