Mini Coopers, Recalled After Fires

The Detroit News-According to the article th Turbo charged Mini Coopers are being recalled because they can catch on fire. BMW is recalling select Mini Coopers, the Cooper S and Clubman models including convertibles, after receiving 12 complaints about fires. These fires occurred in the 2007 and 2008 models. Five of these vehicles were completely engulfed with flames. In eight other cases, fires occurred while the Mini Coopers were parked and the engine was off. After investigation of the Mini Coopers, they were able to pinpoint the problem as being the auxiliary water pump that cools the turbo charger which has an electronic circuit board that can overheat. The cars will be fixed by replacing the water pump.

Heater Ignites Fire in Mims Homes

Florida Today-January 6, 2012-Norman Moody-According to the article Brevard County Fire investigators determined that a fire that destroyed two mobile homes in Mims, Brevard County, Florida was caused by a malfunctioning furnace. The fire broke out around 1:55 a.m. on 4th Avenue in Northgate Mobile Ranch and Travel Park in Mims, Brevard County, Florida. The article goes on to say that both homes had smoke alarms, but batteries were dead in all of them.

One of the home owners, who was not insured, stated he had trouble lighting the pilot light earlier that day. He awoke to find the pilot light out. After he relights the pilot light, he started watching some TV. Shortly after that he noticed the home filling with smoke. The man quickly turned off the propane that fed the furnace. He attempted to extinguish the fire himself with a garden hose, but was unsuccessful. The home owner was able to call 911 from a neighbor’s house.

According to the article the fire began to spread to an adjacent mobile home. The pair ran to the home to alert the neighbor. Luckily, the woman and her dog escaped safely.

Simple facts about the Earth include the following:

1. The Earth is 4.5 billion years old

2. 1.75 million years ago ice covered all of the Earth and most of North America

3. Mount Everest is rising at the rate of 3 cm a year

4. More than 11 million species live on the planet

5. Humans have named about 1.7 million species

6. More than 70 million barrels of curd oil are produced a day

7. Approximately 860 million cars and light trucks in the world burn 260 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel a year

8. The average Earth’s temperature has risen 1.6 degrees between 1970 and 2010

9. Every square mile of ocean contains 46,000 pieces of plastic trash

10. Sea levels are predicted to be 3 feet higher in 2100.

The Earth is our home we need to cherish it.

Two Pit Bulls Attack a Woman Walking in Canaveral Groves

Florida Today – March 17, 2011-J.D. Gallop-A woman was severely injured after being attacked by two pit bulls walking through Canaveral Groves neighborhood in Cape Canaveral, Brevard County, Florida. According to the article the two dogs were loose in the neighborhood. The article goes onto say that the two dogs ripped a large portion of the muscle from the woman’s leg and bite her several times. The woman was taken to Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cape Canaveral, Florida and is in stable condition. The two dogs were removed by Brevard County Animal Services and will be kept for 10 days and will likely be euthanized.

Florida Statute Imposes Non-Delegable Duty of Reasonable Care on Business in Possession or Control of Business Premises to Keep those Premises in Reasonably Safe Condition.

Section 768.0710, Florida Statutes, imposes a duty of reasonable care on person’s in possession or control of business premises to maintain the premise in a reasonably safe condition for the safety of business invitees on the premises; this duty in non-delegable, and the premise owner cannot avoid liability for breach of it’s statutory duty by contracting the maintenance and cleaning of the premise to others. Armiger V. Associated Outside Doors Clubs, Inc., 35 FLW D2194 (Fla. 2nd DCA 10-1-2010).

Death of a Teenager Ruled an Accident

Fort Myers News-Press-November 30, 2010-Reported: the self-inflicted gun shot of a high school student has been ruled accidental, according to a Lee County Sheriff’s office investigation. The 16-year-old teenager died following the incident which happened on November 23, 2010. Investigators do not believe the teenager was trying to kill himself. Instead they feel it was an accidental shooting and the teenager was acting “irresponsibly.” According to the article the youngster was playing with a revolver when he stuck the hand gun under his chin and squeezed the trigger. When nothing happened, he apparently tried it again. Unfortunately, on the second occasion the weapon fired.

Surge Protector Start House Fire

Florida Today-November 17, 2010-According to this article and overloaded surge strip started a fire that caused $2,000 dollars in damage to a West Melbourne home. Fortunately, nobody was in the home when it caught fire in West Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida. According to Brevard County Fire Rescue “a surge protector popped a breaker and caused the fire.”

Two Dogs Attack Woman

According to a Florida Today (Florida Today-October 12, 2010)- A pregnant woman was expected to recovery after being attacked by two dogs in Orlando, Orange County, Florida. A spokeswoman for the Orange County Animal Services stated that the victim was bitten on the leg and suffered severe puncture wounds. The spokeswoman went to say that authorities were attempting to locate the dogs’ owner, who could face charges. Apparently one of the dogs was a female Pitbull and the other a female Labrador mix. Both dogs were captured and quarantined.

Homes Lose Power When Pole Collapses

According to a Florida Today article (Florida Today-October12, 2010-Andrew Knapp)-According to this article several Cocoa home lost power recently when a “rotten” power pole fell, blowing an electrical transformer and taking three other power poles with it. According to the district Chief of the Cocoa Fire Department there was no significant damage and no injuries. Unfortunately 58 customers did loose electrical power. Apparently, “the pole was badly rotted at the base. There was wind. It just fell,” according to the district chief. Power was restored to all customers on the same day.

Six Men Settle with Boy Scouts Over Abuse

According to an Associated Press article (9/1) it is reported that “six men who were sexually abused three decades ago by a leader of their Boy Scout Troop have settled lawsuits against the national organization dedicated to building character among youngsters.” The settlement followed a trial in which the Scouts were accused of failing to act for decades on a growing trove documents alleging sexual abuse–known in the organization as “the perversion files.” “The jury” found the Texan-based Boy Scout of America negligent for allowing a former assistant Scout master to associate with Scouts after he admitted to a Scouts official in 1983 that he molested 17 boys.” According to a New York Times article on this same issue (9/2, A25, Scelye) is it reported “the lawyers said their clients had to decided to settle because there cases would have gone on for years.”
