Florida Auto Accident Statistics

Florida is one of the most populated states in the nation. According to the most recent census, our state is home to more than 18.8 million people. It should come as no surprise that there are many auto accidents that happen in Florida each year given these numbers. With that said, it becomes all the more important why you need to speak with legal counsel following any sort of auto accident or motor vehicle collision that affects you or one of your loved ones.

A Brevard County personal injury attorney from the Charpentier Law Firm will be able to represent your legal interest and assist you in receiving just compensation if you were injured or if a loved one was injured or killed in an auto accident of some kind. We’d like to take an opportunity to look at some state auto accident statistics and nationwide truck accident statistics so you know just what the expect the next time you are on the road.

According to 2009 numbers from Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FHSMV), there were a total of 235,778 auto accidents in the state. Of these accidents, 107,731 of the accidents resulted in property damage only. There were 197,214 injuries to the motorists, passengers, and bystanders involved and there were also 2,563 fatalities from auto accidents.

Alcohol played a part in a number of these accidents. The same FHSMV numbers from 2009 recorded 20,085 alcohol-related auto accidents and motor vehicle crashes. Of that number, 8,994 alcohol-related crashes resulted in injuries and 921 alcohol-related ended in death. Those numbers do not account for all the deaths caused by alcohol-impaired drivers, however, as they are related to crashes only. Full numbers reveal 14,130 alcohol-related injuries and 1,004 alcohol-related fatalities, which just shows just how tragic drinking and driving can be.

Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable on the road. Looking at the FHSMV numbers from 2009, a total of 8,313 motorcycle crashes were recorded. What’s alarming is that 7,435 motorcyclists themselves were injured in these accidents and 376 motorcyclists were killed. (The numbers also showed 26 passengers on motorcycles were killed in accidents.) This should serve as a reminder to be extra safe when driving a motorcycle.

We want to switch gears and look at national large truck accident numbers compiled by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in 2006. These numbers are based o police-reported motor vehicle collisions, and they just go to show why speaking with Brevard County truck accident attorneys is so important. Approximately 368,000 large truck accidents were tabulated nationwide. Of these, approximately 287,000 resulted in property damage only. An estimated 77,000 large truck accidents wound up being injury accidents. There were also a recorded 4,321 fatal large truck accidents.

If you or someone that you care about has been hurt in an auto accident, you need a legal team that will fight for you and your rights every step of the way.
