Florida Today-January 23, 2012-Rick Neale-According to the article, a man bleeding from a gunshot pulled into the parking lot of the Del’s Freez ice cream stand in Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida and collapses on a picnic table outside. Several patrons at the U.S. 1 ice creamy eatery applied basic first aid to the victim until 9-1-1 arrived. An ambulance took the man to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida. Melbourne Police Sgt. said the man was in stable condition when he left the hospital. Melbourne detectives are searching for the suspect driving a gold-colored truck. The shooting occurred at about 4:20 p.m. at 23 E. Avenue C, an apartment complex just a mile south of Del’s Freez. The article goes onto say the victim was shot several times with a small caliber rifle. Melbourne investigators found three bullet casings on the pavement. Witnesses in the complex said they heard gunshots and the saw the victim’s vehicle speed away and the suspect’s vehicle driver away casually.

Florida Today-January 11, 2012-Associated Press-According to the article a man who spent 27 years in prison in connection with a murder he was cleared of and the brain-damaged and paralyzed victim of a crash with a speeding sheriff’s deputy that was late for work may receive millions in compensation. At the time of the crash the man was 18-years-old in 1998. The man was announced a $10.75 million settlement with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office’s insurer. The accused man was released in 2008 after DNA testing cleared him from the charges. The accused will receive $1.35 million from the settlement.

Florida Today-March 23, 2011-According to this article a number of people were held in connection with a recent armed robbery outside the Radisson Resort in Cape Canaveral, Brevard County, Florida. Reports indicate that the robbers were armed with a knife and approached two victims just after 10:00 p.m. in the hotels’ parking lot. According to the Sheriff’s office possession and use of a knife was not yet confirmed and none of the perpetrators has been identified.

Florida Today-November 18, 2010-According to this article a Titusville man found guilty of raping his wife faced her in a courtroom as he questioned her about an affidavit allegedly sent by her that apparently contradicts her original testimony. Convicted man, Christopher Wood, was found guilty of sexual battery and kidnaping in 2007. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison. The prosecutors have maintained that the document is an attempted fraud on the court while supporters of the convicted man, Mr. Wood, believe it to be authentic. While on the stand Mr. Wood ex-wife did not recant her testimony. The ex-wife, who has since re married, apparently states that she did not type or sign the document in question.

Florida Today- Recently, 24-year-old Darryl Kenney was found guilty of murder by a Brevard County jury. The judge was ready to sentence him after the verdict but scheduled the sentencing so the that the victim’s family, the murders grandparents, could be present. During the trial, the 12 Brevard County jurors and three alternates listened for approximately three hours as the defense and state pleaded their respective cases over the course of closing arguments. Twelve jurors then deliberated for nearly seven hours before reaching a verdict of guilty.

Florida Today-October 22, 2010-Kaustuv Basu-According to this article the trial of Darryl Kenney, a Merritt Island man accused of killing his father, will extend into its third week. Apparently, the prosecution has completed its case against the 24-year-old accused the defense has begun its case. Mr. Kenney is charged with first degree pre meditated murder among other charges in the killing of Gary Kenney at his home on Merritt Island in June of 2008. The defense has taken the position that the killing occurred in a “heat of passion” moment as Mr. Kenney felt the need to protect his mother and sister because of his belief that his father was abusing them.

Florida Today-June 16, 2010-A Brevard County jury determined that Christopher Samuels was guilty of first-degree premeditated murder in the 2006 killing of James Bridges near Cocoa. According to the article this conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parol.

Florida Today-May 19, 2010-Kaustuv Basu-According to this article the cases of three Brevard residents who were sentenced to life in prison as teenagers for crimes other than murder might have their sentences reviewed in light of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling. The U.S. Supreme Court, in a split (5-4) decision ruled that juveniles serving life sentences must at least be considered for release. Apparently this ruling affects more than one hundred people across eight states including more than 70 people in Florida. According to the Brevard County attorney’s office, three of these cases may be local.

Florida Today-March 31, 2010-According to this article a 51-year-old woman claims to have robbed a Central Florida Bank because it was on her “bucket list.” The robbery suspect, Patricia D. Edwards, told WOFL-Channel 35 that she acted on impulse when she robbed a Bank of America branch earlier in March. Apparently law enforcement officer’s believe the suspect robbed two other banks, one near Sanford and another in DeLand. According to the suspect “everyone should have a list of things they want to do before they expire.” The article points out that the suspect facing two counts of robbery and being held in a Volusia County jail on a $20,000 bond.
