WESH Orlando-June 15, 2010-The Florida Department of Children and Families is looking into allegations that two care givers at Springs Group Home in Apopka, Florida may have used excessive force on a resident who had cerebral palsy. According to this report the care givers involved have been suspended while the Sheriff’s office and the state are investigating.

Florida Today-June 15, 2010-According to this article the declining number of highway fatalities in Florida is now at a record low. According to state officials there were 1.3 deaths per every one hundred million miles driven in Florida in the year 2009. Although there were 2,563 deaths on Florida roadways in 2009, that number is almost 1,000 fewer highway deaths than the state recorded in 2005. In fact according to the article, the number of Florida highway deaths has declined every year since 2005 when there were 1.77 deaths per every one hundred million miles driven in the state.

Motorcycle Consumer News-July 2010- According to the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) in an April, 2010, hearing held by the U.S. Senate environment and public works committee, Senator Frank Lautenberg repeatedly called for a National Mandatory helmet law. There were other issues covered during the hearing such as impaired driving, distracted driving and big trucks.

Motorcycle Consumer News-July 2010-A woman was painting her fingernails while driving and smashed into a motorcyclists, killing her, she has been convicted of felony reckless homicide, according to a report by the American Motorcyclists Association (AMA). Reportedly, the woman who was driving her automobile reportedly showed no emotion when the jury read the verdict after deliberating after a little more than three hours May 6, 2010. The convicted woman faces up to five years in prison when she was sentenced. The motorcyclist was killed when the driver in question, who police said admitted she was painting her fingernails at the time of the crash, smashed into the back of the motorcycle at a stop light.

Big Dog Motorcycles is recalling certain 2004 models including their Bulldog, Chopper, Mastiff, Ridgeback, Boxer and Pitbull. The problem is electrical in nature. In summary, Big Dog is recalling these models because there is a possible loose connection between the harness connector and the electronic harness controller. This unfortunate condition may cause the motorcycle to experience intermittent loss of electrical power to various components which can cause, among other things, a loss of headlight function or vehicle stall, both increasing the risk of a crash. Florida Today-May 20, 2010-According to this article a Palm Bay bicyclist was injured following a hit-and-run collision with a motor vehicle in south Palm Bay. Palm Bay Fire Rescue crews at the scene of the crash requested a medical helicopter to transport the injured cyclist to Holmes Regional Medical Center.

Florida Today-may 19, 2010-A Kissimmee woman was apparently run over by her own motor vehicle when she stopped to get a cup of coffee that she had apparently left on the roof of her car. According to this article the woman stopped her vehicle, opened the door and stepped on the pavement without putting the car in park. As a result the woman was knocked down by her vehicle’s driver door as it rolled backward. Apparently the woman was hospitalized with serious injuries.
